I am only but a young student of Bharata Natyam, but in my opinion, if the teacher is fully qualified, what difference does it make? Some people do not do arangetrams because they cannot afford it or certain other circumstances have made it difficult to have one. Also, for whatever reason, they may choose not to have one. Everyone is doing an arangetram these days... the great, the good, the OK, and the bad; an arangetram is no qualification (at least not anymore if it was in the past). Performance experience is necessary, but I don't think a formal arangetram is absolutely required if the teacher is a capable one.
