You write, "In [Balasaraswathi's] family, it's either you're a dancer or a musician." This is true, but I want to remind people that Balasaraswati was a great singer as welll as a dancer. Jon Higgins' study of the music of Bharata Natyam published by Oxford University Press, India is almost a hymn of praise to her art. It comes with 2 tapes where you hear her superb singing as she dances. Her singing of a very high calibre, and the way she interacted with her nattuvanar, Ganesan, the male singers (Jnani and/or Narasimhulu)and the other musicinas is exquisite.
