Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar's pictorial biography BAPI - THE LOVE OF MY LIFE written by his daughter Anoushka Shankar was released on August 25, 2002. The biography, published by the Family Series of Roli Books, also contains some intimate and seldom seen photographs from family albums and excerpts from personal letters. |

Bharatanatyam dancer Manjula Lusti Narasimhan worked on a double CD recording of contemporary Bharatanatyam compositions by Madurai N Krishnan for the World Musical Archives Collection, sponsored by the town of Geneva. It was the only south Indian entry to the world collection and was awarded the best CD of the year. |

Sattriya dance of Assam has now been included in empanelled dance form of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations for sponsoring performances abroad. The Department of Culture and the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training will also provide scholarships to students on an ongoing basis. |

The Center for Cultural Resources and Training is preparing a 30 minute video film on Sattriya dance and a cultural package comprising 24 picture cards, each with a detailed description and an 8-12 page booklet, giving information about the art form and creative activities for distribution among school children and teachers. The video film and publications are expected to be ready by Feb 2003. |

Naveena Samskarika Kala Kendram School at Balanagar in Hyderabad, is the only school in Andhra Pradesh to have a full fledged course in Kerala performing arts. Kathakali, Mohiniattam and percussion instruments like chenda, maddalam and timila are all taught at the department called the Kala Vedi. The school has devoted 5 periods each day for different sections in the school and training after school hours for the eager learners. All teachers are from Kerala Kalamandalam. |

Ratikanta, son of Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra and his cousin Banamali Maharana are forming an institute, the Mardala Academy to establish Pakhawaj as a solo instrument. Ratikanta is also documenting his father's dance and style to preserve it for posterity by recording his interviews of people who have worked with his father. He has already talked to more than 200 people. |
