Kathakali maestro Padmanabhan Nair's CHOLLIYATTAM in 2 volumes brought out by Kerala Kalamandalam is the Bible for all those who are engaged in the world of classical performing arts. He is the son of the great Kathakali exponent Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon.

Kalluvazhi Ittiraricha Menon (1828 – 1903) introduced the Kalluvazhi style of Kathakali but his chief disciple Pattikkamthodi Ravunni Menon perfected it through the Kerala Kalamandalam and the Kottakkal PSV Natya Sangam and gradually it came to be known as the Pattikkamthodi style.

Bhoja's Sringaraprakasa (1005 – 1054 AD) is a treatise on sringara, the only rasa of ahankara or abhimana. Bhoja also discusses important aspects of nritya, namely poetry and drama. ('Textual Traditions in Dance: an overview,' by P S R Appa Rao, Nartanam, Jan-Mar 2001)
