For Kathakali students, general education is necessary. Sanskrit and Malayalam should be taught in detail. The gurus of the past were well versed in this, thanks to the interaction they had with the educated Namboodri families.

Bisaka Sarker has made films STEPS AND ARCHES in 1995, which is about South Asian dance against the background of British architecture. Her film in 1996 titled MAKING OF SPACE is a documentary on dance and disability in India.

The Theatre Museum in London is one of the great performing arts resources with a very impressive collection on South Asian dance. Some of the collection highlights include costumes owned by Uday Shankar during his many performances in London, photographs and ephemera of performances by Ram Gopal, Uday Shankar and Mrinalini Sarabai.

Padma Subrahmanyam released the book "Naatyattil Pudhiya Padaigal" by Udupi Lakshminarayan and Nandini Ramani received the first copy on September 13, 2002 on the occasion of the 10th GURU CHARANA SMARANAM, a tribute to the late Guru Kancheepuram Ellappa Mudaliar at Rama Rao Kala Mandpam, Chennai.
