It is said that when the dance drama 'Chitrangada' written by Rabindranath Tagore was staged at New Empire in Kolkata for the first time, the poet was on stage throughout, reciting portions from the play.

The Brihadeeswara temple at Thanjavur has the longest Tamil inscription known to exist. It gives detailed information about the 400-odd accomplished dancers, called talippendir, who were in the temple's rolls. They performed during daily rituals and festival processions.

For some people 'Chhau' is a dialect which means six faces - forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks, lips and chin and a mask bears the six parts of the face. The word 'Chhau' ordinarily means mask and because the dance is performed by use of mask, it is called 'Chhau dance.'
