In Mricchakhatikam, a Sanskrit drama supposed to have been written by Sudraka in the 2nd century, the central story is that of noble but impoverished young Brahmin Charudatta who falls in love with a wealthy courtesan Vasantasena, who is introduced as a good dancer.
