Sattriya dance which was performed by the male Vaishnavite monks derived its name from the term 'satra' which means monastery.

Thanjavur K P Kittappa Pillai had his lessons in music from Natesa Sastry & later from his father Sangeetha Kalanidhi K. Ponniah Pillai. He learnt dance from his maternal grandfather Pandanallur Meenakshisundaram Pillai.

Kalyani Kutty Amma, doyenne of Mohini Attam had her arangetram in 1939 at the residence of Vaidyaratnam P S Varier, founder of the Kotakal Arya Vaidya Sala. Her last performance was in 1948 / 49.

Rukmini Devi & Kalanidhi Narayanan started their initial training in Bharatanatyam with Mylapore Gowri Amma. Kalanidhi started her training when she was seven years old and Rukmini Devi when she was 32 years of age.
