During one of her performances at RR Sabha, Chennai,
dancer Sudharani Raghupathy’s foot was pierced by a nail, when she did a
sarukkal adavu. She didn’t wince, afraid that even a fleeting
expression of pain on her face would mar her performance. “I smiled a
little more than usual, and at the end of the programme, many said that
my smile had become more radiant after the sarukkal adavu,” she laughs. (‘Mired in controversy’ by Suganthy Krishnamachari, The Hindu, Nov 30, 2012) |
As part of her 60th birthday celebrations in 1978,
Balasaraswati donated a large bronze bell to the Kapali temple in
Mylapore, Chennai, to which Mylapore Gowri Ammal had been dedicated.
Bala’s name was inscribed as donor and can be seen even today at this
temple. (Exhibition on Bala by Museum of Performing Arts (MOPA) Foundation at Music Academy, Chennai, Jan 2019) |
