Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy, who campaigned to end the practice of dedicating women to temples, was herself the daughter of a devadasi.

Muthuswami Dikshitar (1775 – 1835) went to Varanasi and learnt Tantric yoga, sastras and Dhrupad style of singing from Chidambara yogi, who was a source of spiritual inspiration for him.

Composer Syama Sastri (1762 – 1827) did not hail from a family of musicians. He was originally groomed to be a priest.
