The Purulia Chhau is primarily a ritual dance, which incidentally entertains and is dedicated to the Sun God.

Besides literature, Jayadeva set a trend in music, dance, drama, sculpture and painting. His songs are sung in Carnatic as well as Hindustani styles. Odissi, Manipuri, Kathakali and Bharatanatyam styles have been enriched by the use of Jayadeva's compositions.

The Mukteswara temple in Bhubaneswar has two outstanding reliefs on the ceiling. In one, Ganesha is depicted in a dancing pose and the other has a woman surrounded by a full orchestra. (Kapila Vatsyayan – Indian Classical Dance)
