The Geeta Govinda was the subject of dances performed by the Maharis at the Puri temple, Orissa. A temple inscription of King Prataparudhara Deva in the early 16th century decreed that only songs from the Geeta Govinda were to be sung and danced at the time of offering food to Lord Jagannath.

The Parasurameswar temple in Bhubaneswar dating to the 8th century has a number of sculptures in bands of animated musicians and dancers.

The famous dancer Jayalakshmi of Pandanallur became the queen of King Ramanad. Devadasi Subbalaksmi became a famous classical singer.
