The differentiation into marga and desi is post-Natyasastra: marga refers to the Natyasastra, whereas desi is the regional dance.

The first ever Hamsa Award for achievement in dance was awarded to Sarala Kumari.

Rock-shelter drawings in India reveal the earliest examples of dance. Figures at the Bhimbetka rock-shelters, drawing of 'urddhakeshin' Shiva at Nawda Todo, forms of monkeys at Gupteshvara and a number of human figures at Pahadgarh, Tikla and Abachand present evidence that dance was prevalent in those days. These drawings belong to the period from 5000 to 2000 BC.
