If you read the mythological origins of Bharathanatyam, Natya veda is derived from the 4 other vedas, from which Natysashtra supposedly came into being. How well mythological connections can be established I don't know.
Origins of Adavus that are currently of use can be traced to Gangai Muttu nattuvanar, the ancestor of the Tanjore Quartet and the Sangita saramrita by King Tulaja II. That's some 300- 400 years ago.
As to the connection between karanas and Adavus- I am not sure which school of thought I conform to.
Adavus are basically derived from the Tamil word"Adaivu" meaning to reach a point from a starting point. Some claim it comes froma Teleugu root which means movement. You can definitely see the Tamil/Telugu regional origin even from the word.It is comprised of the sthanakamm, Nritta Hasta and Chari. These are considered building blocks of Korvais/Jathis in Nritta. Coincidentally 108 adavus are recognized.
Karanas are a coordinated movement of the hand and the feet and supposedly a basic unit to nritta
So what exactly is different between them. It may not be apparent in the terminology. But Karana uses the movement of the thigh, shank, leg and the feet. The scope of movement of the thigh joint is much higher than in adavus.
I do not know if adavus matured to Karanas or if the corollary is true. I am not sure what kind of relationship exists between the two.
I use an English translation of Natyasashtra by Sri Satguru publications-a division of Indian Books Center.
Good luck! Please share what you learn about the relationship / evolution...
