I agree with all that Mr. santosh has to say- about essential
components to make a dancer a good one. The Natya sashtra has come out
with the best Narthaki/Nata/ Gayaka Laskhana descriptions as possible.
I am talking about getting the audience to see or hear Classical Art
forms in the first place. Only then would they be willing to pay a classical
artist for a performance. I am not a performing artist, but an avid rasika
who yearns for a greater base for meaningful Indian Classical Arts.
Why is it hard to convince even 10% Of Indians that it would be worth
inviting a Classical performer. Is this an unusual phenomenon restricted
to where I stay? Is it widespread? I would definitely like to hear more
on this .With the rasika base dwindling how can we afford performances?
How can art be a profession and provide sustenance too? So will art be
only for the rich in due course?
Without the rasika, art may not be meaningful. If all they are going to look for is some ideal group formations, some synchronized steps and attractive patterns and movements and catchy Indian Fusion Music, we will be stunting all art forms. Why are fast numbers more catchy to the audience? Does it have something to do with their decreasing concentration span and higher stress levels. Are Thillana, Anjalis and Kavutuvams and the likes the only items fit to be seen? Should artists cater to the audience or should they elevate them? Should artists be willing to perform at any venue? How do we tackle people who eat/drink,talk and walk around during the best of performances?
Probably while the artists perfect their skills, other genuinely interested
people could help with building a base for them. How do we do it? What
are the factors that make it difficult?
Money/Governmental disinterest/ sanitized education without preamble
to art in Indian education system? What exactly is it?
Some many questions to be answered and resolved. Probably we can come up with some conventions, ideas and suggestions that we ( Narthaki lovers/community) could implement at our places. I think this issue is as important and urgent as Global warming!!!
