hi. i dont think any of ur questions can be considered insulting,
actually i was working on a survey trying to find out the difference in
perception of indian and non-indian dancers, and i know that this diffirence
exists. first of all its body of asian and, lets say, european which is
different, and which makes non-indians to struggle more to make oneself
look and feel natural with indian classical dance technique. its not a
rule, i know there r exceptions, but i'm talking of what i've noticed studying
both in india and in my country. yes i am feeling confident in my dance
although i'm still having problems with my face expressions or abhinaya:)
as for comparing myself to an 'indian dancer' i'm a bit confused, coz there
r very bad indian dancers and there r extremely good dancers on stage now.
no matter how much i will try to reach their level i know i will look different
anyway while dancing for the very reason that i'm not indian. it doesnt
bother me much, i dont think my dance will be worse for that reason.
at a certain stage i had uncomfortable feeling thinking of me being
christian and performing dance which is so much connected to hindu religion.
but then i made it clear to myself that i dont want my dance to be religious,
spiritual - yes, but not religious.i dont feel like using christian stories
for my dance, but some day i would love to experiment with new ideas in
dance other than hindu ones. but for that i still need to explore the dance
form. in order to make experiments u have to understand very clearly of
what u gonna work with, so that the dance form will not lose its esthetic
value.
thank u for ur questions, they r very much to the point and i've been
thinking myself of it alot. is there any way i can contact u? i would like
to share my ideas with u.
