That's a very interesting interview....thanks so much for the
link, Megha. I also confirm what Ganga Grace said about the misunderstanding
concerning indian classical dance in the west which is normally placed
among the non-western "ethnic" dances. Just recently I performed with my
teacher on an outdoor-stage where also other groups of dancers performed.....there
were sardinian folk dances, middle eastern dances, irish dances and other
folk regional or national type of dances from all over the world. When
I am asked about indian dance I stress the point that what I practice is
a classical art form and that there are also folk dances in India, but
I don't know them.
As for the religius aspect of it.....I've never had any problem dealing
with the traditional indian pantheon. Although I was born in a cristian
catholic country I was raised in a non-religious family and that maybe
helped me to keep my mind open to other traditions and to explore other
faiths and beliefs. I am myself sure about the universal message which
is at the base of every faith and that the hindu religion has a lot to
offer to the world...spiritually speaking.
