When cricket India team returned to a spectacular welcome back
at home. I remembered once Guruji (Birju Maharaj) echoed the sorry state
of arts. That it would have been better for me to teach my next generation
the gaming [cricket] like gavaskar sachin etc and not dancing. today also
we dont see much in the broadcasting media about the dance or so to say
the art scene of India. But the attempts like NARTHAKI dot com and some
other are the only platform left for us like minded people to share thoughts.
On Narthaki dot com with some public private partnership we can start
a section on research in dance forms of India or develop some kind of data
base for listing the forms existing in all the regions of country. Not
much is coming out from Jammu Kashmir, where many old traditions are now
extinct or on merge of extinction. a branch of Hindustani music was prevalent
in that region since centuries. most recently the maharajas of jammu were
patrons, most famous singerswere there in that court. stalwarts like Malika
Pukhraj. I presume that Kathak and some local forms of dance were prevalent
there.
