To be honest, the purpose behind the dance has become extinct. People who practise this dance or even music which has a spiritual meaning without following or pursuing a spiritual path will identify very little of the meaning. The depth of emotions are not manufactured but felt actually as can be seen in saints like Tyagaraja.
The realised souls like the mahatmas actually can feel the entire universe as their Beloved. The love relationship portrayed in so many varnams, padas proves this. Anyway the purpose of spirituality is not to become a good dancer. These dances and music came out from our ancestors' devotion to God.
To perform this dance about one's devotion to God at one instance and
then continue the indifference/hatred towards one's neighbour and all our
ordinary reactions in life at another instance is not only meaningless,
but seems to me a hypocrisy. Just like the saints say about the devotee
who gets angry at another devotee blocking his sight of the deity in the
temple...when in fact, the latter devotee is also God.
