On top of that, I'm afraid that your "answer" does not even answer anything. Are you saying all the people besides the one man are perverted? Perhaps only that one man was meant to see Lord Shiva in Valli's dance. After all, he was a famous yogi devoted to Lord Shiva. Maybe he could still see God in her even if she did not sit in araimandi or hold her shoulders erect! This legend is not about dance or recognizing beauty; it is about being able to sense goodness and devotion in people. It is a wonderful story but does not pertain to this discussion.
It is unfortunate and even sad that you believe that an open mind is merely a "lame western invention." This is the same attitude that is destroying dance and making Bharata Natyam (as well as other art forms) drenched with ego rather than appreciation for others.
