Namaste,
I'm a mass media student of St. Xavier's College, Mumbai, and I'm doing
a sociology paper on the glocalisation of Odissi for an academic journal.
Glocalisation basically refers to the regional elements that add their
flavour to a global phenomenon. For this paper, I wish to discuss the regional
elements in different parts that have been incorporated with Odissi, for
example, in Mumbai, we have Odissi dancers who choreograph Odissi pieces
to Marathi songs. I was wondering if such pieces have been created even
in other parts of India. In case you have ever worked on such a project,
please do write back with all the details, and a few photographs, if possible.
The second topic to be discussed is somewhat on similar lines. Nowadays,
many dance companies have productions or performances that consist of a
harmonious blend of two dances - fusion is hwta this is generally called.
I wanted more information on such fusion pieces that have been made with
Odissi as one of the prime elements.
Dancers no longer stick to traditional themes and items which are a
compulsory part of the Odissi repertoire. They are constantly exploring
new themes and using dance as a medium to disseminate all kinds of messages.
Dance is being used in education, and most importantly, it is now used
to bring out many current and socially relevant ideas and messages. This
is one more topic I really need info on.
Please do furnish this information as soon as possible, if you feel
it could be of use to me.
Ranjana Dave.
