 Hi there,
It cannot be understated that the arangetram or formal debut of a dancer is a milestone event in a young dancer's life. Having an arangetram is wonderful because it is a process of self-discovery (at least mine was)... and I learnt to appreciate the art and my proprioceptive sense which helped me to execute movements with precision. I also realized that I was taking so much for granted prior to the arangetram training!
It has almost been 10 years since my Arangetram, and I've continued learning despite a hectic academic and work schedule. If you want to have your Arangetram, do discuss it with your Guru and get his/her opinion on the matter.
A major problem with Arangetrams today (especially in the US) is that there is no dearth of teachers (many of whom are unqualified) and debuts are now a dime a dozen. I'm lucky in that my Guru truly stresses quality rather than quantity. If you wish to have an arangetram simply for the glamor or "to graduate from dance and move on," my advice to you is to find that teacher who'll do it-- there are many if that's truly your goal. Arangetrams can be bought very easily-- and to me, it's unbelievable. Contrapositively, if you wish to stick with dance and perform your debut with sincerity and discipline, have a talk with your Guru regarding whether you are at the stage where you can give your debut and what things you should do practically to prepare to have an arangetram. An arangetram is really just the beginning.
wishing you the very best,
