I know many people who employ a 'stick figure' methodology when learning items in a very short amount of time. They will draw stick figures of the pure nritta movements. For the mudras and abhinaya portions of items, they'll simply write it out in a way that is meaningful to them for reference.
I don't know where you are located, but Smt. Rathna Kumar (artistic director, 'Anjali,' Houston, Texas) has written a book titled "Adavu" where she has compiled adavus with corresponding stick figures that can be used for reference. A glimpse of this book might help you develop your own personal method for dance notation.
