SPOTLIGHT

- Radhika Shurajit received the GLOBAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD for her contribution to arts internationally for over 25 years. Her award was presented by Bob Blackman, Member of Parliament, at the House of Parliament on 4 June 2019 in London. She is the first Indian to receive this award.

- Akademi's The Troth has been shortlisted for the ‘Special Arts & Culture Award’ at the UK-India Awards organized by India Inc. The awards took place on 28 June 2019 in London as part of UK-India week, celebrating the relationship between the two countries.

- Bharatanatyam dancer Sudha Raghuram of Montgomery, Alabama, received the ALABAMA FOLK HERITAGE AWARD on May 22, 2019 from the Alabama State Council on the Arts. Since 2000, she has been awarded the Folk Arts Apprenticeship grant eight times by the Alabama State Council on the Arts.

- Girish Raghunath Karnad (19 May 1938 – 10 June 2019) was an actor, film director, writer, playwright and a Rhodes scholar. He passed away in Bangalore due to age related ailments.

- Eminent makeup artiste Kanakaraj passed away on June 17, 2019 at Bangalore, aged 60. He served exclusively in the field of dance for about 40 years as makeup man. He was almost a permanent makeup man of Natya Institute of Dr.Maya Rao and Prabhat Kalavidaru. Most of the dance schools in the city availed the services of Kanakaraj. His presence will be missed.

- Samsmaranam: 15th anniversary of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra
Srjan, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra Odissi Nrityabasa presented a two day program of Odissi dance by Srjan Ensemble and Shivagni Musical Ensemble on 6th and 7th April at Rabindra Bhavan at Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.


- Nrutya Rangoli Samanvay Art Festival: Part 1
It was a Bangalore Bonanza, the three day (19, 20 and 21 April) Nrutya Rangoli Samanvay Art Festival organized by that dynamic dancer, guru, choreographer, curator, and an able administrator Dr. Veena Murthy Vijay, held at Chowdaiah Auditorium.


- Nrutya Rangoli Samanvay Art Festival: Part 2
The highlight was Nayaka Vilasa, 4th edition of Creative Lab. In this session six male dancers were assigned challenging task of interpreting women's feelings.

Nava Pallava, the brainchild of Ashok Jain of Spic Macay deserves all encouragement, for it aims at providing performance opportunities to young artists, who apart from being outside the charmed performance circuit, are also exploited by so called impresarios providing platforms for a fee.

'Return Ticket' presented by Natyaranga was a very brave attempt to create a parable in the practice of clinical psychology. 'Bhalo Lok' (A Good Person) presented by Sayak was faithfully adapted by Chandan Sen to an Indian milieu reflecting a placid rural background…
