Narthaki - stepping into year #24!

Notes of appreciation >>

ANITA SAYS.....

After all the wars are over,
The butterfly will still be beautiful

- Ruskin Bond, author

Anita Ratnam

And so here we are! At the half way mark of the year, heading towards the longest day of 2023 - June 21st - and wondering where the last months went!

May was full of pomp, ceremony and circumstance! A coronation, an inauguration, the end of two major cultural icons (singer Tina Turner and the TV show SUCCESSION), the return of Nrityagram to their beloved New York landmark JOYCE Theatre, several premieres by diaspora dancers, American summer festivals with classical dancers performing in parks and museums- it was a never ending spectacle!

A month away from home gave me a different perspective on dance, our daily endeavours and the increasing disenchantment among diaspora artistes with visiting artistes from India.
This month I choose to focus on some points that swirl around dance and the tone is reflective, sometimes somber and not always celebratory. So, read on....

It was a letter from dancer-scholar Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2021 that put the authorities on a mission to track and unveil the history and significance of the SENGOL since Chola times. Sengol is a gold coated silver sceptre adorned with a nandi (bull) on top and 5 feet in height, representing power and justice. It is considered a symbol of authority, and transfer of power from one ruler to another. Made in Tamil Nadu, it was handed over to the country's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, to mark the transfer of power from the British to Indians on Aug 14, 1947 on the eve of India's independence. On May 28, 2023 during the inauguration of the new Parliament building, the Sengol was ceremoniously transported to the new Parliament building by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and installed in a glass case next to the Speaker's seat.

QUOTE

"Profound art, deep art, it can change people. And I always say, change happens in four different seasons. The first one is, people change when they hurt enough that they have to. Secondly, people change when they see enough that they're inspired to. Thirdly, people change when they learn enough that they want to. And the fourth one is, people change when they receive enough that they are able to.
So in dance, you feel that you're in the process of change. Something is changing every day. And perhaps for a moment if it connects with one audience, it'll also change them profoundly."
- Akram Khan (On FB, May 11, 2023)

ATMA SHANTI

Mridangam maestro KARAIKUDI MANI (11 Sept 1945 - 4 May 2023) passed away after an illness aged 77.
He learnt Carnatic music from the age of three but soon gave up his vocal training in favour of learning the mridangam. He received his first national award at age 18 from the then president of India, Radhakrishnan. Mani learnt mridangam under the tutelage of Karaikudi Ranga Iyengar, Harihara Sharma and KS Vaidyanathan. His concept of 'Thani Avarthanam' concerts without sruthi accompaniments like violin or vocal, gave solo percussion instruments prominence. Mani was known for his technical brilliance and unique style of playing, later known as the Karaikudi Mani style. He performed with eminent Carnatic musicians and collaborated with many international artistes. He also composed for dancers, notably his niece Rajeswari Sainath and Vyshnavie Sainath.

In 1986, he started an ensemble, Sruthi Laya that combined melody and percussion. Three years later, he founded the Sruthi Laya Seva School that has centres at Chennai, Bangalore, Australia, London, US, and Canada. Mani founded a magazine called Layamani Layam. In 1999, he received the Sangeet Natak Akademi award. He donated his cash awards towards philanthropic causes.
