OBITDr Mandakranta Bose (1938 - 2026)- Jai Govindae-mail: govindajai@yahoo.com September 22, 2026  Dr Bose in Somerville/Oxford Scholar and author Dr. Mandakranta Bose passed away on September 10, 2026 in her home city of Vancouver/ Canada. Professor Emerita at the University of British Columbia, and director of the university's Centre for India and South Asia Studies, she held a D. Phil. degree of Oxford University and was a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies and the Department of Sanskrit (Mahamahopadhyaya), University of Calcutta. Deeply engaged with dance and drama, Dr Bose was a noted dancer in the Tagore style for many years as well as an actor. She has written many books on dance such as: Movement and Mimesis, Speaking of Dance, The Dance Vocabulary of Classical India amongst others. She taught at UBC from 1990 onwards, becoming the director of the Centre for India and South Asia Research in 1998.  Dr Bose with Jai Govinda On a personal note, Dr. Bose was instrumental in bringing me to Vancouver. To assist me in establishing myself in BC, she created a Bharatanatyam course for me to teach at UBC. Her support continued over the years by presenting my performances and lecture demos at events such as the Ramayana festival with invited guest Dr. Kapila Vatsayayan, the International Sanskrit conference and so forth. She selected my picture for the cover of her book "Speaking of Dance". She sometimes affectionately referred to me as Gaura Krishna (white Krishna). I visited Dr Bose on her birthday a year ago, and she was a chief guest at the celebration of Mandala Arts and Culture's 25th anniversary, also marking my 70th birthday in Nov. 2025. Sincere condolences to her husband Tirthankar, daughter Sarika and son Pablo, her extended family and friends. Dr. Bose is greatly missed.  Jai Govinda is the founder of Mandala Arts and Culture, Vancouver, and acted as its artistic managing director for 25 years. He has been a practitioner of Bharatanatyam for over 40 years.
