SHRINGARA VAIBHAVAM - a dance presentation by Geeta Chandran, New Delhi

Opening with a verse that celebrates Shringara Rasa, Geeta Chandran presented two verses from Kalidasa’s Ritusamharam. Geeta then performed an alarippu composed by London based mridangam vidwan Karaikudi Krishnamurthy who accompanied her on the percussion.

The center piece of Shringara Vaibhavam was a varnam in the ragam Latangi, Adi talam, a new composition of Durga Prasad.

To represent the feelings of male shringara, Geeta presented verses from a twelfth century text - Chaurapanchasika - written in Sanskrit, by Bilhana. For this, Geeta drew inspiration from the Chaurapanchasika miniature paintings from the collection of the late N C Mehta. The program concluded with a Raas dance based on the works of Haveli sangeetkaars of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The music was composed by Vasanti Krishna Rao, who provided the vocal accompaniment.

Geeta’s costume was designed by Sandhya Raman. The evening had special significance for Geeta as her idol Vyjayanthimala Bali saw the whole program and stayed to congratulate Geeta on her inspired performance.
