Samāhāra - A Centenary Offering

Celebrating the eternal legacy of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra through Scholarship, Dialogue, and Dance

The city of Kolkata witnessed an extraordinary confluence of memory, scholarship, devotion, and artistic excellence through 'Samāhāra - A Centenary Offering,' a two-day celebration commemorating the Birth Centenary of Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. Conceived and curated by Odissi exponent Shayomita Dasgupta under the banner of Sangati - A Home for Odissi, the event unfolded at Gyan Manch, Kolkata on 6th and 7th June 2026, bringing together distinguished gurus, scholars, artistes, disciples, and rasikas in a collective act of remembrance and homage.

The inaugural day commenced with a ceremonial lamp-lighting and floral tributes to Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, followed by an invocation by the students of Sangati. The central feature of the day was a thought-provoking seminar moderated by Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, with eminent panelists including Gurus Madhavi Mudgal, Daksha Mashruwala. Alokananda Roy, Piyal Bhattacharya and Chetna Jalan. The discussion offered profound insights into Guruji's artistic vision, pedagogical philosophy, choreographic genius, and the transformative role he played in shaping Odissi as a globally respected classical dance tradition.

A documentary screening further illuminated Guruji's remarkable journey, allowing audiences to witness rare moments from the life of the legendary maestro. The interactive dialogue that followed fostered meaningful engagement between senior practitioners and younger generations, reaffirming the continuing relevance of the Guru-Shishya Parampara. The presence of eminent personalities including Tapati Chowdhurie, Gurus Aloka Kanungo, Sharmila Biswas, and Ashimbandhu Bhattacharya enriched the scholarly discourse and elevated the occasion.

The second evening transformed reflection into artistic celebration through a meticulously curated dance presentation. Guided by Guru Ratikant Mohapatra as Sutradhar, the programme unfolded as a traditional Odissi journey, revealing the aesthetic depth and choreographic brilliance synonymous with Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra's legacy.

The repertoire commenced with Mangalacharan - Namami Vighnaraja, presented by the junior students of Sangati, followed by the sculptural precision of Batu Nritya. The senior students presented the lyrical and rhythmic splendour of Arabhi Pallavi, while Shayomita Dasgupta offered a deeply evocative rendition of the Ashtapadi "Sakhi Hey," capturing the emotional subtleties of Jayadeva's poetic universe. A vibrant ensemble presentation of Dashavatar showcased dramatic expression and collective artistry, culminating in Moksha, which symbolised spiritual liberation and served as a collective offering to Guruji's centenary.

Attended by distinguished members of the cultural fraternity, the event emerged as more than a commemorative celebration. It became a living testament to the enduring vitality of Odissi and the timeless wisdom of a master whose artistic legacy continues to inspire generations.

Samāhāra ultimately stood as a profound offering of gratitude, remembrance, and continuity - affirming that Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra's vision remains alive in every movement, every disciple, and every act of sincere artistic pursuit.
