Harini - a soulful rendition by Meera Sreenarayanan- Rubina Sudharmane-mail: rubinasudharman@gmail.com March 20, 2026 Hariṇi presented by Meera Sreenarayanan, was a deeply contemplative Bharatanatyam solo that unfolded like a poetic meditation on the soul’s spiritual journey. Rooted in profound philosophical thought yet expressed through simple and evocative imagery, the performance gracefully bridged devotion, emotion, and artistry. At the center of the narrative was the delicate metaphor of a little bee, symbolizing the jivatma, the individual soul. Through nuanced abhinaya and expressive storytelling, Meera portrayed the restless yet devoted nature of this soul as it circled the radiant Golden Lotus, the manifestation of Lakshmi. Her portrayal was subtle and layered, allowing the audience to feel the bee’s longing, curiosity, and reverence as it journeyed closer to the divine presence. ![]() One of the most compelling aspects of the performance was Meera’s exploration of the navarasas. Emotions like love, wonder, compassion, yearning, courage, and surrender were articulated with much clarity. Her expressions flowed naturally, reflecting the internal evolution of the soul through worldly experiences. Technically, the choreography balanced grace and precision. The rhythmic passages were crisp and controlled, while the expressive segments carried a quiet intensity that held the audience’s attention. Particularly striking was the moment when the bee’s devotion transformed into a longing for union. Through delicate gestures and meditative stillness, Meera conveyed the transition from admiration to surrender. The philosophical heart of Hariṇi lay in the idea that Lakshmi is not only the divine destination but also the guiding force and the path itself. Meera captured this beautifully, embodying Lakshmi as both compassionate Guru and luminous lotus. Meera’s Hariṇi was a soulful and introspective performance that combined refined Bharatanatyam technique with thoughtful storytelling. It was not merely a dance recital but a spiritual reflection expressed through movement, emotion, and devotion. Harini was presented as a part of Natyanjali’s 10 year by NJNS New Jersey Natya Sangamam. ![]() Rubina Sudharman is a dancer and choreographer based in New Jersey.
