Krishnamurthy June 14, 2023 The dance theatre presentation in Kathak by Sangita Chatterjee at the Bangalore International Centre was a captivating exploration of the role Draupadi endured in her life's journey. The opening sequence where she questions the bloodshed and reflects on the identities of those involved, sets the tone for her portrayal. The deep bond between Draupadi and Krishna (referred to as Saka) is highlighted depicting Krishna as her guide and protector throughout her life. The storyline delves into the various dimensions of the personality of Draupadi as she questions the many events that shaped her life. Despite the challenges she faced, she remains steadfast in her trust and reliance on Krishna. The performance explores many scenes such as Draupadi's birth from the sacrificial fire, her swayamvara (when Arjuna wins her hand), her anguish as the wife of five husbands, her confrontation with the Pandavas over the game of dice, her exile for thirteen years, and her reflection on motherhood and her sons. Draupadi's interaction with her pet bird is that she will cast a spell and tweak her beak. Her statement about not seeking liberation (moksha) but wanting to return as Krishna's instrument to remind men of the injustice towards women add depth to her character. Draupadi and Krishna may be forgotten unlike Radha and Krishna but she says to Krishna, "If you are the fire of Yagya, I am the Yagyaseni." The artiste skillfully showcased nritta movements, demonstrating technical expertise with quick tempo changes, percussive footwork, and captivating spins (chakkars). The incorporation of dialogues, subtle facial expressions, hand gestures and body language effectively communicated the intensity of emotions throughout the storyline. The soulful and melodious compositions provided a rich musical backdrop enhancing the emotional impact of the presentation. The lyrics by Himanshu Srivastava added value to the delineation of the storyline. Overall the theatre presentation offered a refreshing perspective on Draupadi's journey, showcasing her strength, resilience and unwavering trust in Krishna.
