Bharatanatyam in Iceland
October 26, 2021
Bharatanatyam exponent and scholar Bala Devi Chandrashekar gave a lecture and demonstration on Bharatanatyam at the University of Iceland on the 21st of October 2021. The presentation was a part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations of the Government of India.
Bala Devi Chandrashekar started her presentation with an overview of origin history and the progress of Bharatanatyam and then went on to demonstrate basic hand, body, and leg movements in the art of Bharatanatyam. This was followed by an interactive demonstration of Bharatanatyam, which actively engaged over 200 attendees comprising of Heads of various Departments, faculty and students of the University of Iceland. Only a handful of them had visited India and none of them had seen a Bharatanatyam performance before this presentation.
Bala Devi then went on to present a small snippet from her latest production 'Padmavati - an Avatar'. The Q&A was a very lively session with practically everyone in the audience asking a question or clarifying a point in the presentation. There were quite a few questions on the areas of gender identity, roles and Bharatanatyam. This performance was arguably the first Bharatanatyam presentation in Iceland!
