Radhika Shetty's debut in Chennai - Vanishree Ravishankar e-mail: vanishree219@gmail.com February 26, 2018 Dancer, organizer, director, Nrityaangan Academy, Radhika Shetty of Mangalore, gave a Bharatanatyam performance at R.K. Swamy Auditorium on Jan 24, 2018 under the auspices of Sri Parthasarathy Swamy Sabha, Chennai, during the 118th dance festival conducted by the sabha. In her debut performance in Chennai, Radhika commenced with a rare Jagannatha Ashtakam, a composition of Mangal Prasad Pradhan set to music by Karthik Hebbar of Bengaluru, which created a divine ambience. Next, the popular Pada Varnam "Mohamana" in ragam Bhairavi and rupaka talam was presented with a difference. Unlike the usual practice of starting the first hand of Pallavi as "pada-padaartham," that is describing or setting the hands for the literal meaning of the song, the dancer straightaway showed comparative description which was interesting. Jathis of the varnam were lively. Post Varnam, Jayadeva' ashtapadi "Yahi Madhava" was well presented maintaining the sthayi bhava of the khanditha nayika in a good attempt. Radhika concluded her performance with a vibrant Thillana in Brindavani, adi talam, a composition of Dr. M. Balamuralikrishna. The orchestra always adds more colour to any dance performance. Likewise here, able support on the nattuvangam by Vidyashree Radhakrishna, soulful singing of G. Srikanth, Vedakrishnaram's able support on mridangam and melodious flute by Rakesh Sudhir further enhanced Radhika's performance. A senior disciple of Guru Savithri Jagannatha Rao, Vanishree Ravishankar is a Bharatanatyam performer and teacher based in Chennai. |
