For a holistic education, every year the foundation organizes ‘Alva’s Virasat,’ a weeklong mega cultural spectacle of Indian performing arts by renowned artistes witnessed by nearly 40,000 to 50,000 spectators every day. On this occasion, Alva’s Virasat Award is conferred on an accomplished artiste comprising a citation and cash award of Rs. 1 lakh. The celebrated awardee is carried to the dais in a decorated palanquin. The awardee for the 13th edition this year, Bharatanatyam guru V.P. Dhananjayan was felicitated on Jan 13, 2017. “I have not seen or attended such an award function anywhere in the country. Kudos to Dr. Mohan Alva, Chairman of the Foundation, for such a meticulous and professionally arranged celebration with 3 days of folk and classical naatya of Bhaaratam, attended by not less than 50,000 connoisseur audience,” says V.P. Dhananjayan. The other stalwarts who received this prestigious honour earlier are tabla maestro Zakir Hussain, Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Dr. Sonal Mansingh (Odissi), Dr. Padma Subrahmanyam (Bharatanrityam), Dr. K.J. Yesudas (Carnatic & playback singer) and Dr. S.P. Balasubramaniam (playback singer).
