World Dance Day in Singapore

May 11, 2013

Noida based Kathak dancer and teacher Alaknanda of Alaknanda Institute for Performing Arts (AIPA) was invited by Sri Vairavimada Kaliammam Temple in Singapore to participate in their month long cultural festivities. Dance has always been performed in temples and to be able to relive the era was a true blessing for the group.

Kathak Andaaz workshop was held under the guidance of Alaknanda from April 20 to 27 for Singapore dancers. The Kathak performance on April 26 featured AIPA Noida dancers Garima Nijhawan, Prabha Dubey, Drishti Bhatnagar, Nupur Jian, Vaishnavi Joshi, Mallika Manocha, Simar Swani and Saumya Shukla. It was an event of fruitful association and cultural exchange of AIPA Singapore and AIPA Noida where the dance lovers mingled and danced together. Kathak was performed for the first time in the Kaliamman Temple.  Alaknanda and dancers presented Adhuram Madhuram, Durga stuti, Tarana Kalavati and Malkauns, Shiv stuti, Teen taal and Sufi.

On April 28, Alaknanda and dancers were joined by Srabonti Dutta, an established Odissi dancer in Singapore, and her group. They presented Mangalacharan, Moksha, Basant Pallavi and Shiv stuti. Monishikha and Soumi, disciples of Guru Ratikant Mohapatra, presented Guru Vandana. About 40 dancers performed together to celebrate World Dance Day.
