Recently, we, the Mylapore Trio Surendranath, Amarnath, Aparna (Kalakshetra alumni) of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation made a two day visit to Madurai and had an excellent darshan of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar on the first day of the auspicious month of Karthigai. This was the first visit after we had put up the grand Golu Durbar (display of dolls) at Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple. We were accompanied by our beloved Jaya teacher of Kalakshetra, Rajeshwari Srinivasan and Srinithi.

We made it a point to visit the birth place of the NIGHTINGALE OF INDIA, MS Subbulakshmi in Madurai. But the sad part is that no one in the localities was aware of it, which is actually a stone’s throw distance from the West Gopuram. After unrelenting search in the scorching sun, finally to our shock, a small house in a congested lane was found to be the birth home of the great legend and the room where she was born houses a tailor shop today, which really dumfounded us.

The only identification is a projecting terracotta veena stuck on the facade of the house. There is not an iota about her greatness seen anywhere, not even a name board or sign board in the vicinity… neither her picture nor a photograph seen anywhere in her house. It was a bolt from the blue for us seeing the pathetic state of affairs and hence we wanted to create awareness about the birth place of the great Melody Queen, Bharat Ratna, MS Subbalakshmi which is neglected, unknown and forgotten...
