Shivaratri dance recital at Shiva Vishnu temple, Florida
- Sangeetha Sridhar

March 29, 2008

The Shiva Vishnu temple in South Florida, organized a dance concert for Shivaratri by Sujatha Srinivasan and her daughter Shriya Srinivasan on March 2, 2008 as part of the Shivarathri celebrations of the temple.

Sujatha danced to a compilation of recorded music.  A thorough professional, Sujatha sailed through the evening’s performance with elegance and grace.

The recital commenced with the traditional Thodayamangalam in praise of Lord Gnana Sabesar of Vazhuvoor. Sujatha then performed the Oothukadu composition in praise of Nartana Ganapathy. Sujatha's precise movements set the tone for the rest of the recital.
Sujatha did full justice to the time tested kamas varnam "Samiyai Azhathuvadi."  Annamacharya’s Dolayam in praise of Lord Vishnu and his avatars saw both the mother and daughter on stage. The carrying of the palanquin with the Lord inside was performed aesthetically by the duo.

Sujatha enthralled the audience with Krishna Nee Begane, so much so that one could hear giggling from the younger dancers in the audience. Sujatha has trained her daughter remarkably well. Shriya Srinivasan who performed two solos and one with her mother was perfect in her execution of nrtta and her abhinaya was to the point.

Sujatha concluded her recital with the brisk Kathanakuthuhalam thillana of Dr. Balamuralikrishna and a Bhoomi Mangalam of Pandit Ravishankar. Sujatha needs to be commended for strictly adhering to tradition.  Her graceful dance fully emphasized the Vazhuvoor bani.  South Florida residents hope to see more of her performances in the future.
