 Bhagavata Mela Natya Nataka Sangam presents 86th Bhagavata Mela Nataka Mahotsav April 30 - May 8, 2026 Melattur February 24, 2026 The 86th Year of Bhagavata Mela Nataka Mahotsav is scheduled to take place from 30th of April to 8th May 2026. The Great Bhagavata Mela tradition, a Telugu culture, is a rare Temple / Theatre Art in a unique blend of Bakthi, Music, Dance and Drama in vogue over 4 centuries. It is the only surviving link today in Tamil Nadu that connects us with the ancient Sanskrit theatre. The Bhagavata Mela Natakams composed in chaste Telugu by Melattur Venkatarama Sastry are performed annually in adherence to the Natya Veda, in the Sannidhi of Lord Varadaraja Perumal of Melattur Village (Tamil Nadu) as part of Sri Narasimha Jayanti Vasantotsav. It came into being as a result of the Bhakti movement about 5 centuries ago. It is still preserved in its purity as a true Temple Art. The sentiments are expressed in classical music of Carnatic tradition, and the dance and abhinaya in Bharatiya Natya technique with poetic speeches, dialogues etc. Only male artistes portray female roles.
