She is the daughter of V. Raghavan, a Sanskrit scholar and musicologist and trained under T. Balasaraswati and nattuvanar K. Ganesan, with additional training in Carnatic vocal music from Prof. B. Krishnamoorthy and T. Mukta. She has received several awards, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for overall contribution. Film 'Bala' on Balasaraswati by Satyajit Ray 'Bala' is a 1976 documentary film by Satyajit Ray about Bharatanatyam dancer Balasaraswati, jointly produced by National Centre for the Performing Arts and Government of Tamil Nadu. Tanjore Balasaraswati, also known as Balasaraswati (13 May 1918 - 9 February 1984), was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1957 and Padma Vibhushan in 1977 by the Government of India. |
