Natanakairali Irinjalakuda presents World Premiere of 'Mricchakatikam' Kutiyattam Ranga Shankara July 1 & 2, 2025 Bangalore June 17, 2025 Natanakairali Irinjalakuda is vibrant with activity as it celebrates twin milestones that mark 50 years of institutional history as well as the 80th birth year of its founder Guru G. Venu. Over the past 4 months, the institution has buzzed with the presence of a number of established Kutiyattam artistes from across Kerala coming together for a stage production 'Mricchakatikam' - a Sanskrit gem from 2000 years ago through the timeless art of Kutiyattam has been the focus and intent of the activity. ![]() Under the leadership of Kutiyattam artiste and Director of Natanakairali, Kapila Venu, a host of artistes have combined into the production of 'Mricchakatikam'. Breathing life into the characters of this timeless Sanskrit classic are Kapila Venu, Sooraj Nambiar, Margi Sajeev Narayana Chakyar, Pothiyil Ranjith Chakyar, Nepathya Srihari Chakyar, Kalamandalam Jishnu Pratap, Shankar Venkateshwaran, Saritha Krishna Kumar, Margi Anjana S. Chakyar, Gurukulam Tharun and Aran Kapila. ![]() 'Mricchakatikam' is distinctly different from other Kutiyattam plays. Interestingly, the magical play is surprisingly centered around just common folk and not the usual royalty. Here, a clear democratic objective is presented through the story in which the rule of an unjust King is replaced with that of a capable 'commoner'. The stage play carries a deep and significant sentiment of transforming a simple 'Clay' cart into one of 'Gold' and this idea is the spirit and inner meaning of the conceptual production. The accompanying percussion artistes who support the production are Kalamandalam Rajeev, Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambiar, Kalamandalam Hariharan, Kalamandalam Vineesh, Kalanilayam Unnikrishnan, Gurukulam Athulya. Backstage coordinators are Kalanilayam Haridas and Kalamandalam Vaishakh. G. Venu who has earlier presented in Kutiyattam, Mahakavi Kalidasa's 'Abhinjana Sakuntalam', 'Vikramorvasiyam', and Bhaasa's classic 'Urubhangam' is also the Production Director of 'Mricchakatikam' as well. ![]() Guru G. Venu The group is all set for the world premiere at Rangashankara, Bengaluru on 1st and 2nd July 2025.
