Chennai-based Aalaap presents the second edition of The Diaspora Dance Festival, on December 30 at Medai - The Stage, Alwarpet, between 10 am and 8 pm. This edition features nine individual performances by dancers - Surya Ravi (California, USA), Vivek Ramanan (Rhode Island, USA), Aarthy Sundar (Dallas, USA), Suhasini Muthukrishnan (Georgia, USA), Meera Balasubramanian (Singapore), Deepa Mahadevan (New York, USA), Gayatri Seshadri (Georgia, USA), Pranamya Suri (Dallas, USA), Shriya Srinivasan (Massachusetts, USA), Sonali Skandan (New York), Archana Raja (California, USA).

The Diaspora Dance Festival (TDDF) is an attempt to represent, showcase, and create an exclusive platform for the diaspora dance community from around the globe in our city, Chennai. This year, The Diaspora Dance Festival is in partnership with Srshtee and is supported by Narthaki.

Vazhi - Pathways, Aarthy Sundar, Surya Ravi and Vivek Ramanan

A prelude to the festival is Vazhi - Pathways, a performance by three dancers, Aarthy Sundar, Surya Ravi and Vivek Ramanan, students of Dr Apoorva Jayaraman. This will be followed by individual performances by each of the dancers.

Following that, the event features Suhasini Muthukrishnan, who will present SYNERGY which explores the notion of synergy in Bharatanatyam through the mesmerizing interplay of lyrical beauty, musicality and technical prowess. This will be followed by a performance by Meera Balasubramanian, who will present YAADUMAAGI: A DANCE OF INFINITE FEMININITY, exploring the many manifestations of feminine energy, embodying grace, strength, nurturing, and resilience. Deepa Mahadevan's presentation will center the idea of gender and brings to the fore narratives that are not typically presented in a Bharatanatyam repertoire. Following this will be NOSTALGIA by Gayatri Seshadri whose presentation is based on the theme of nostalgia, which includes her cherished memories and also serve as reminders of a sense of loss or sadness because those moments are gone and cannot be relived in the same way.

Pranamya Suri presents Guru Parampara - Kuchipudi Over Three Generations reflecting the deep connection between tradition and innovation, as each generation imparts its wisdom while nurturing new expressions of the dance. Following that is Shriya Srinivasan's presentation REFLECTIONS which casts a spotlight on issues of women's rights and land and power disputes, while celebrating the resilience and beauty of the human spirit. This will be followed by HER WAY, where Sonali Skandan will present a collection of original works in the female voice. The event concludes with Archana Raja's YELLAMMA, which she calls a work-in-progress, a folk tale about a rural goddess who emerges from the travails of a regular woman.
