Vadivelu of the Thanjavur Quartet was among the early
violin players of south India. Trained by a European Catholic priest in
Thanjavur, he propagated the violin in many parts of south India,
particularly in the durbar of Maharaja Swāti Tirunal of Travancore,
Kerala. |
Of the many compositions of the Thanjavur Quartet, the
maximum available have been authored by Ponniah. Ponniah has also given
many defining ragamalikas and often included the name of the raga in his
compositions. He, in fact, wrote parallel compositions in Tamil for
many of his songs that have their original versions in Telugu. - Dr. B.M. Sundaram |
