| NARTHAKI STUDIO SERIES Chennai As the founder of Narthaki, Dr. Anita Ratnam has worn the producer and curator’s hat for decades now. Under the umbrella of the Narthaki Studio Series, which she formally revived in the 2020s, Ratnam has curated and played host to varied chamber concerts in her home studio. "I choose artists whose works interest me and I present them as professionally as pos¬sible," she says, "The artists are compensated; they have access to tech and lighting and for audiences, all of whom have to pay a flat fee of Rs. 250 for entry, there are chairs and refreshments." Ratnam’s independent bungalow on Chennai’s Cenotaph Road is nearly 60 years old and her home series is also an ode to the legacy of her parents, who ensured their home was always open for artistic creation, practice and showcase. Ratnam says home concerts celebrate the idea of “sharing” rather than a performance. “The entire experience has to have a quality of quietude; both the artist and the audience recognise that this is a home. In the middle of a performance, you could hear the dogs bark, the sound of a bus passing by, birds chirping, and the overall frenetic nature of a city… it’s important to flow with it.” Dancers at Home by Akhila Krishnamurthy, openthemagazine.com, 15 Mar, 2024 When professional performance gets closer and cosy 2025 Oct 29, 2025 ![]() Sep 22, 2025 ![]() Aug 10, 2025, 6.30 - 7.30 pm ![]() Shruthe Raammohan, a talented and promising young Bharatanatyam dancer whose artistry and commitment to the form reflects the spirit of the Narthaki Studio series. 2024 Dec 14, 2024 ![]() Rasoham presented Kutty Kacheri March 3, 2024 ![]() Narthaki Studio Series presented Vazhuvoor Sampradaya by Shanmuga Sundaram at Narthaki Studio, 6.30pm Review Vazhuvoor Sampradaya by Shanmuga Sundaram by Jeetendra Hirschfeld Feb 27, 2024 ![]() Devaniya School of Kathak in association with Narthaki Studio presented Leela at Narthaki Studio, 6.30pm Review Kathak draped in a different sensibility by Leela Venkataraman Jan 16, 2024 ![]() Desires Unquenched : Hymns and Songs of the unrequited love for Hari & Hara by Aniruddha Knight A unique presentation by Madhusudhan Kalaichelvan who chanted and Aniruddha Knight who danced to the hymns from the vaishnavite saint Shri Nammazhvar and the shaivite Saint Sundarar, live for the first time, both steadfastly adhering to the traditions they represent. What wistful tales would she speak about her love and losses; about her dreams and determination? In her uproariously witty story-theatre performance, Ramaa Bharadvaj brings you into the enchanted world of Chitrapushpa - a floral-damsel with plenty of pizzazz, and her dancing beaus from five ethereal kingdoms. Will Chitrapushpa find and unite with her one true love? "The Legend of Chitrapushpa" is a contemporary folk fable, scripted, designed and performed by Ramaa Bharadvaj in her signature style blending wit, wisdom and insights, and features evocative storytelling, elegant dances, engaging theatre and vibrantly creative soundscape. This work is developed from an original concept imagined specially for Ramaa by renowned puppeteer Gary Jones of the Blackstreet USA Puppet Theater of California, and carries a cardinal message of universal oneness. |
