The Season talk piece on the main page was interesting and informative.
As a NRI general audience member, I would like to share my experience.
I attended both music and dance concerts. The audiences for music concerts
were excessive with some folks sitting next to the singers..one has to
applaud the singers for retaining their concentration when a 10 year old
child sitting on the stage yawns away out of boredom. For dance, the numbers
were restricted and seemed to rely on performer's goodwill and clout. After
reading Kutcheribuzz, Narthaki, Carnatica, Sangeetham, it was an eyeopener
to soak in the ambience personally. For music audiences, the energy was
palpable and everyone was talking in the aisles..there were folks who had
flown in from all parts of the world and didn't mind talking with strangers
and sharing their experiences. For dance, people were not so conversational
and hung in groups.
All the performances were good. It was nice to absorb everything from
the canteen to the performance to the
performer's "look for the day". And yes..the famous audience members
who made heads turn as they walked in for a performance. To sum it up,
I find that the audiences in India have a greater knoweldge of arts in
general. Outside India, audiences come from all walks of life having spent
much of their life studying in India and catching up with arts later in
life. The differences are clearly visible but the enthusiasm of audience
members is common everywhere. After reading so many of the music and dance
websites for years, this was my personal experience as a general member
of the audience.
