Hi..I have the same prob. since medicine is generally considered a prestigious profession and can be quite lucrative in the U.S., my family expects that i should devote all my energy and efforts towards my profession. anything that distracts me (such as bharathanatyam) is considered trivial and quite honestly i know my family feels it is a waste of time. like u mentioned, i find dancing to be the most fulfilling activity and wish i could make it my profession. but i do realize that it is important to secure my financial base, which will eventually give me more freedom to do what ever i want i.e. dance. in any case, it is hard to struggle with this dilemma because pursuing medical training is quite rigorous and i find it very challenging to find time and energy to devote to dance. therefore i often do feel very frustrated.
