Saraswathi Thiagarajan

Saraswathi Thiagarajan (nee Ramatchandrayer), best known by family and friends as Sarasi Raj, passed away in her Pierrefonds, QC home on Monday June 29, 2009. She was the founder and guru of the Peali Arpana Academy of Classical Dance, an Indian dance school with locations in Montreal, Vancouver and Winnipeg.

She has graduated over 75 students in the art of Bharatanatyam, bringing this rich tradition to North America. A self-made entrepreneur, she was a graduate of Maharani College of Bangalore and immigrated to Canada in 1971. She has been the recipient of numerous accolades recognizing her efforts in the arts including the "Outstanding Indo-Canadian Award" from NACOI.

She was also a playwright and a short-story writer. Her lifetime of artistic achievements will be remembered by communities both local and abroad. She is survived by her daughter Kalpalatha, son Thiagarajan Ramanan, daughter-in-law Jayanthi, and her three
grandchildren, Rajesh, Neeraj and Sarayu. She will be fondly remembered as a charismatic and ambitious teacher, loving mother and devoted grandmother.

Funeral Services were held at Rideau Funeral Home, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, QC, on Wednesday July 1, 2009. Contributions in lieu of flowers in her memory may be made to her dance school Peali Arpana, 17731 Rue Antoine-Faucon Pierrefonds, QC H9J 3N2.
