A WIZARD IN BHARATANATYAM - GURU SHRI KUBERNATH A. TANJORKAR by Ashish R.Tanjorkar e-mail: ashishtanjorkar@rediffmail.com Jul 2001 Born in 1921 in Tanjavur, Tamilnadu in a traditional musical family, Guru Shri Tanjorkar received his dance training i.e. the classical dance BHARATANATYAM under the Gurukul of renowned Guru Shri Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai of Pandanallur (Tamilnadu) and received his classical vocal training from Shri Balakrishna Pillai of Tanjavur. After completion of training, he had an opportunity to serve as a dance teacher at Bhatkande College of Hindustani Music, Lucknow up to 1948. In the golden days of his Highness Sir Sayajirao Gaekward who was deeply interested in upliftment of Indian Classical Art, this Tanjorkar family came here all the way from Tanjore and settled. Guru Shri Kubernath received training of Hindustani Classical Music from renowned Ustad Fayazkhan of Baroda. He was appointed as "Nattuvanar" in Baroda State. After giving his long services of 30 years in the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, he retired in 1981 and established the institute Tanjore Nritya Shala for promoting the art of Bharatanatyam. This institute at present is being successfully run by his son Shri Ramesh K. Tanjorkar and daughter-in -law Smt. Leela R. Tanjorkar under his able, personal guidance. To propagate and spread the original BHARATANATYAM in pure form, he has established the Trust namely THE TANJORE DANCE MUSIC & ART RESEARCH CENTRE. He is the managing trustee of this institute. For valuable service in the dance field, Guru Shri Kubernath Tanjorkar received prestigious awards like THE PRESIDENT'S AWARD OF 1993 from Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, SARANGDEV AWARD of Mumbai, AWARD OF GUJARAT from Sangeet Natak Akademi, Gujarat, etc. At present even at the old age of 82 years, he is rendering his valuable services of giving guidance, directions and advice to so many leading dance institutes and brilliant upcoming dance students. |
