Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier: Maddalam maestro - Kalamandalam Sashi Kumar e-mail: samarpana_samiti@rediffmail.com September 14, 2006 Kalamandalam Sankara Warrier is an acclaimed percussionist (Kathakali, Maddalam), who has contributed greatly to the world of Indian Arts and Culture. Sankara Warrier has given the maddalam a new dimension. He is hugely responsible in bringing the maddalam, which had always been dominated by the chenda, to the fore. He learnt the basics from Kalamandalam Appukutty Poduval and Kalamandalam Narayanan Nambisan. In a career spanning almost four decades, he has won many accolades and has been honored by several Kathakali clubs. He is not only a celebrated percussionist but also a highly disciplined teacher. This Maddalam maestro has also published a book touching upon the origin and growth of Maddalam as a temple art form (Publisher: Kerala Kalamandalam). Titled 'Maddalamenna Mangalavadyam,' this is the only comprehensive guide to the playing and understanding of this instrument. His excellence has known no cultural or regional boundaries. Apart from performing in India, he has traveled extensively and performed in USA, UK, etc, thus contributing significantly in putting the Maddalam on the global map. Now, as he completes 33 years of dedication to art and culture, his fans, disciples and other art lovers have proposed to organize a one day program on October 8, 2006 covering different cultural events culminating in the honoring of the maestro with VEERA SRINGALA by the Maharaja of the erstwhile Kochi. The Veera Sringala Samarpana Samiti has been formed for the organization and success of the program. Kalamandalam Sashi Kumar is the secretary of Veerasringala Samarpana Samiti.
