Akademi Dance-Film Festival
March 19 & 20, 2021 UK
March 13, 2021
AKADEMI hosts its first ever SCREEN DANCE FESTIVAL happening online on 19 & 20 March, celebrating the best of South Asian dance on screen. Curated by screendance practitioner, Omari 'Motion' Carter, and our Artistic Director, Suba Subramaniam, the festival will feature new and archived South Asian dance-films along with selected talks with filmmakers and dance artists.
The films cover a wide range of topics from motherhood, the queer body and the commoditisation of identity, to India's dream robot to the moon, amongst other thought-provoking subjects. Several of these films are a direct response to life in lockdown. Akademi has also commissioned three short original screen dance works. The aim is to increase the presence of South Asian dance in dance film festivals. The recipients of these commissions are: Archana Ballal, Jaivant Patel Dance and Kaajel Patel.

With an autobiographical starting point he uses humour and the languages of popular culture and explores fantasy through a domestic lens.
