January 24, 2021
Madurai R. Muralidaran is an acclaimed dancer, singer, choreographer, nattuvangam artiste, composer, lyricist, mridangist, and a well-known guru. In a first of its kind attempt, Muralidaran undertook the challenge of teaching 50 unique Bharatanatyam jathis (pure rhythmic portions) to around 125 students from around the world. He set a goal of achieving this task in only 3 months (Nov & Dec 2020, and Jan 2021).
All the jathis were composed specifically for the challenge on a week-to-week basis. To compose so many jathis in such a short span is a remarkable achievement. Not just that, each jathi was choreographed weekly and taught to students by Muralidaran with the aid of his equally talented daughter Kavya Muralidaran, and senior student Deepa Mahadevan. Students met online every Saturday and Sunday for 2 hour classes and were taught the jathis under their able guidance. Each jathi is a unique entity in and of itself.
The goal of the challenge was to have each student ready to perform all 50 jathis back-to-back to ultimately try and achieve an India Book of Records and Asia Book of Records. Besides India, students attending the challenge are based in countries like Australia, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, United Kingdom and USA. Moreover, there is a diverse student body with students of various backgrounds and ages (young children and older dancers).
The special guest is music maestro T.V Gopalakrishnan and chief guest is Bharatanatyam guru Leela Samson.
