'Bhakti', the idea, has had a long and interesting journey. A concept emerging out of indigenous thought and culture, Bhakti has manifested in multiple ways, be it the contemplative Bhakti Yoga of the Bhagavad-Gita, the joyous, service and Sādhana based, 'Ishtha Daiva' idea of the Srimad Bhagavatha Purān, which in turn, influenced the ecstatic Bhakti or Krishna Devotionalism of the Eastern Gosvamis. The teachings of the Bhagavatham, the Vishishtadvaita, Dvaita and Shuddha Advaita schools of philosophy impacted immensely, poets and thinkers across the Indian Subcontinent.
Culling from codified texts like the Narada Bhakti Sutrās, Bhakti Rasāmrta Sindhū, Ujjvala Nīlamani, Bhakti Rasāyana, to the intense, evocative, simple yet sublime outpouring of poets, in different languages and dialects, let us explore 'Bhakti' as a concept, a Rasa, an ideology, a statement and a system of practice.
